computerperipheralsthatareeasytouse,affordablypriced,andthat  
enhanceyourcomputingexperience.  
Using this manual  
Thismanualincludescompleteinstructionsforscannerinstallation,  
use,andmaintenance.Notethatuse,inthiscontext,refersto  
scanneroperationindependentofthetaskperformedwiththe  
applicationsoftware.Thisguideisorganizedinadoasyouread”  
format.Forbestresults,performthetasksastheyarepresented.

What is TWAIN?  
TWAINistheinterfacethatlinksthescannerwithscanningsoftware  
applications.TWAINisanindustrystandardthatenablesyoutouse  
theImageReaderwithanyTWAIN-compliantsoftwareapplication.

WiththeintroductionofWindows95,theTWAINspecificationhas  
beenoverhauledtotakeadvantageofthe32-bitarchitecture.When  
youinstallourscannerdriverunderWindows95,youwillhavetwo  
TWAINsourcesonefor16-bitapplicationsandonefor32-bit  
applications.Usethefollowingasaguidetoselecttheappropriate  
source.  
16-bitapplicationsarelegacyWindows3.xprogramsthatyouare  
runningunderWindows95. InfoCenterandImagePals2GO!  
imageeditorare16-bitapplications.  
32-bitapplicationsareprogramsspecificallydesignedfor  
Windows95, totakeadvantageofperformanceenhancements  
providedbythenewarchitecture.  
Youmayexperiencescanningproblemsifyoudonotusethe  
appropriatesourcebeforescanning.  
ThereisnochangetotheTWAINsourceforWindows3.xusers.Only  
the16-bitTWAINsourceisinstalled.  
Anote aboutapplicationsoftware  
Thescannerhardwarebyitselfisnotveryuseful.Ittakesacombination  
ofthescannerhardwareandapplicationsoftwaretoperformanytask.  
Beforeyoubeginscanning,youneedtochoosetheappropriate  
applicationtouseforthetaskathand.Pleasereadthissectiontogain  
anunderstandingofthetypesofscanningsoftwarethereare.  
Scanningsoftwaregenerallyfallsintotwogroups,Graphics(image  
editing),orOCR(OpticalCharacterRecognition).Eachtypehas  
specificfeaturesdesignedtoaddressthetechnicalchallengesfacedin  
thescanningofgraphicsoroftext.  
Graphics:Softwareprovidestheuserwithimageeditingtoolsfor  
performingextensivemodificationstoart,photographs,orother  
continuoustoneimages.Whilehavingtheabilitytoscantext,unlike  
OCRsoftwareitisnotdesignedtospecificallyidentifyindividual  
characters. Anyimagescannedusingagraphicsprogramcanonlybe  
savedinagraphicsfileformat(i.e.TIFForJPEG).Itcannotbesavedas  
aneditabletextfile.YourscannerpackagecontainsImagePals2GO!  
imageeditingsoftwaretofacilitateyourimageeditingrequirements.

OCR:Softwareinthiscategoryisdesignedtorecognizealphanumeric  
charactersinpreparationforexporttowordprocessinganddesktop  
publishingapplications.Inotherterms,itcreatestextfiles.OCR  
softwarewillnotprovideimageeditingcapabilities.Ifthereisno  
intentionofeditingagivenpieceoftext(withorwithoutgraphics),it  
maybesimplertoscanandsaveitasagraphic.OCRisoneofmany  
scanningcontrolfeaturesincludedintheInfoCenterapplication  
software.  
Additionaltypesofapplicationsareavailablethatoffersolutionsfor  
specialoruniquetasks.Theseincludedocumentstorage,form  
scanning,faxutilities,copyutilities,customscreensavercreation,  
photoalbumcreation,andsoon.Ifapplicationsareintendedtolink  
directlytothescanningdevice,lookfortheTWAIN-compliant  
specification.Ifcompliant,theyarecompatiblewithInfoImageReader  
scanners.

Becausescannersarecapableofinputtinglargeamountsofdatain  
relativelyshortperiodsoftime,theycommonlypushcomputer  
systemstothelimitsoftheircapabilities.Beforebeginningany  
scanningtaskoroperation,carefullyconsideryoursystem’s  
processingcapabilities,especiallyprocessorspeed,RAM,and  
availableharddiskspace.OCRprocesses,faxoperations,andthe  
processingofsimpleblack&whitegraphicsareleastdemanding.  
Highresolutionscanningoflargeimagesinfullcolorcreatesan  
extremedemandforprocessortimeandmemory.  
WhenyouarescanningwiththeTWAINinterface,thenumberlabeled  
imagesize(calculatedinbytes)providestheworkingfilesizethatis  
theresultoftheselectedscanningmode,resolution,andimagesize.  
Takecarefulnoteofthisinformation.

Installation  
Installationofthescanneriscomprisedoffewstepsanddesignedto  
beaseasyaspossible.Thefollowinginstructionswalkyouthrough  
connectingthescannerandcable.Itisimportanttonotethatboththe  
scanninghardwareanditssupportingsoftware(e.g.InfoTechnician  
andtheincludedapplications)mustbeinstalledinorderforthe  
scannertooperate.  
Connecting the scanner  
Attachthefemaleconnectoroftheinterfacecabletotheportonthe  
scannerlabeledHost.Placethescannerunitinthedesiredlocation,  
androutetheinterfacecabletothecomputerinsuchawayasto  
assureitissafefrompossibledamageduetopinchingorcrimping.  
Insertthemaleconnectoronthecableintotheparallelportonyour  
computer.Thecablecanonlybeinsertedonewaydonotforcea  
connection.  
Important: Thescannerwillnotfunctionuntilthedevicedriveris  
installed.ThisisloadedwhenyouruntheInfoTechnician,described  
laterinthischapter.  
Using the pass-through  
Thisscannerisequippedwithanadditionalportforconnectingyour  
printerorotherparalleldevice.Thisway,twodevicescansharethe  
parallelport,andyouwon’tbeinconveniencedbyhavingtoswitch  
cableswhenyouwanttouseoneortheother.  
Tousethepass-throughport,connecttheprinter’scabletotheport  
labeledPrinteronthebackofthescanner.Boththescannerandthe  
printerarenowsharingtheparallelportandcanbeusedatanytime,  
exceptintandem.

TheInfoTechnician  
TheInfoTechnicianisanautomaticinstallationutilitythateditsand  
installsthescanner’sdeviceandTWAINdrivers.Thesedriversprovide  
thelinkbetweenthescanninghardware,thescanningapplication,  
andthecomputer’soperatingsystem.  
Installingthedevicedriver  
RuntheInfoTechniciantoinstallthescannerdrivers.Todoso:  
1. PlacetheInfoScannerSystemSoftwareCD-ROMinthe  
CDRomdrive. SelectRunfromtheFileMenuinthe  
WindowsProgramManager(Windows3.1x), orselect  
RunafterclickingStartonthetaskbar(Windows95).  
2. Typed:\install\setupatthecommandline(substitutethe  
appropriatedriveletteriftheCD-ROMdriveisnotthed”  
drive).Click OK.  
3. SelecttheScannerDriver:Clickonthepicturedisplaying  
theImageReaderExpressscanner.  
4. ClickOKtoinstalltheTWAINdriverinthecdriveor  
substitutetheappropriatedriveletterforthedrivethat  
containstheWindowsdirectory. Thescreenwillinform  
youthattheInstallationwasSuccessful.ClickContinueto  
begintheInfoCentersoftwareinstallation(Figure2.1).

Installingtheapplicationsoftware  
Whenthehardwareanddevicedriversoftwareareinstalled,installthe  
InfoCenterapplicationsoftwarefromtheSystemSoftwareCD.Please  
refertotheQuickStartGuideforInfoCenterandImagePals2GO!  
ImageEditorinstallationinstructions.Manualsforbothapplications  
arealsoincludedontheInfoSystemSoftwareCD.  
PerformUtilityDiagnostic  
Afterinstallingthedevicedriverandapplicationsoftware,checkthat  
yourdriverisinstalledatthecorrectportaddressbyperforminga  
scannerutilitydiagnostic.Thisstepwilldetermineifthescanner  
is recognized by the computer  
1. SelectInfoTechfromtheprogrammanagerinWindows3.1xor  
fromtheStartmenuinWindows95.  
2. FromInfoTechselectScannerUtilitychecktheEPPboxandclick  
onVerifyPortintheUtilitywindow.

3. Thediagnosticwillsearchforandconnecttocorrectportad  
dress.Ifthediagnosticissuccessfulyouwillreceivethefollowing

modeinyourcomputer’sBIOSorCMOSsettings-seeinstructions

EnhancedParallelPortissupportedbylatemodelmotherboards(i.e.  
VLBandPCI).Contactyourcomputermanufacturerifyouareunsure  
aboutwhetherornotyoursystemsupportstheEPPmode. Ifyour  
systemdoesnotsupporttheenhancedparallelmode,contactInfo  
PeripheralsInc.at(408)538-2500ext.2534toorderanEPPinterface  
card.  
Important!  
ChangingyourBIOSorCMOSsettingscanrenderyourcomputer  
systeminoperable. UsecautiontoensurethatonlytheParallelmode  
ischanged(thiswilleffectyouparallelportonly).Pleaseconsultyour  
computerhardwaremanualforinstructionsspecifictoyoursystem.  
ToChangeYourParallelPortModeSetting(inmostsystems):  
1.Restartyourcomputerandwheninstartupmodepressyour  
deletekey,thiswilltakeyoutotheBIOSMenu.  
2. LocatetheParallelPortoption,itwilltellyouwhataddressthe  
parallelportissetforandthemodeoftheport.  
3. Readyourscreenforinstructionsonhowtochangesettings,  
andchangeyourparallelportsettingtoEPP.  
4. Gobacktothemainmenu.  
5. Exitandsavechanges.

Scanningfeaturesandcontrols  
Beforescanningimages,itisimportanttounderstandthescanner’s  
basichardwarefeaturesaswellasthesoftwarecontrols.  
Hardware features  
Power  
Thescannerrequiresitsownpowersource(usetheadapterprovided).  
Thereisnoon/offpowerswitchontheunit.Whenthescanneris  
pluggedintoapowersource,itspowerisonandtheindicatorlightislit.  
Pleasenote:Thepowerlightmayremaindimlylitevenwhenitisnot  
pluggedintoapowersupplybecauseitreceivesasmallportionofits  
powerfromthecomputer.Thescannerisactivatedwhenfirstpowered  
onorwhenyouchooseAcquire.Bydefault,thelampisprogrammedto  
remainonevenwhenthescannerisnotinuse-indicatingthatpoweris

TheInfoTechnicianloadsaTWAIN-compliantdriver.Thisdriver  
functionsasauserinterfacelinkingthescanninghardwareand  
applicationsoftware.  
Scanningisinitiatedfromwithintheapplicationsoftware.Allscanning  
activitiesarecontrolledfromtheuserinterfacewindowtitledFlatbed  
Scanner. TheFlatbedScannerwindow’sPre-scancommandisused  
topreviewtheimageinordertoadjustthescanningarea,contrast,  
andintensitybeforeexecutingtheactualworkingscan.Theactual  
scanisthenplacedintotheapplicationsoftwareforviewing,editing,  
printing,orstorage.Inthissection,thecomponentsandcontrolsof  
theFlatbedScannerwindowareexplained.

Theinterfacewindow’srightsidedisplaysPre-scannedimages.The  
CropBox(dashedline)surroundingtheperimeterisusedtoselectthe  
areaofthepre-scannedimagethatyouwanttoscan.Adjustingthis  
areasignificantlyeffectstheamountofmemoryusedandthustime  
requiredtoperformthescan. Itisalwaysrecommendedthatyou  
adjustthecropboxtoscanonlytheportionoftheimagethatyou  
needtoscan.Positionthepointeroveracornerofthecropbox,click,  
hold,anddragthebordertoadjustthescanningarea.  
Settings  
ThesettingsboxislocatedinthetopportionofyourTWAINwindow.  
Byclickingonthedownarrowyoumayselectfromalistofpre-  
definedscansettings. Thesesettingsrepresentfilescontaining  
informationabouthowthescannershouldscantheimage. Choose  
themostappropriatesettingforyourtask. Forexample: Ifyouare  
scanningablackandwhitephotographon8.5x11paperyou  
wouldselectB/WPhotoPage(letter)intheSettingsmenu. These  
settingscanbefurthermodifiedintheControlPanelandEnhance  
menu. Ifyourimage/documentdoesnotmeetanyofthese  
specificationssimplyselectthedefaultsettingfromthesettingslist.  
Pre-scanandthenadjustthecropboxandscanoptions(locatedin  
PanelandundertheFiltersandAdvancedmenus)accordingly.Click

onHelpinthetopportionofthewindowformoreinformationabout  
scansettings.  
Gamma  
Gammareferstothenumericalvalueforthelevelof intensityor  
brightnessinthetonesofcolororgrayscaleimages.Asthenumber  
increasesthetonalintensityincreases. YourTWAINinterfaceallows  
youtomakeadjustmentsfortwotypesofgammasettings.Image  
Gammareferstothegammavalues thatdirectlyaffecttheoutcome  
ofthescanandwillbesavedwiththerestofyourscannedimage  
information.ThisdiffersfromMonitorGammawhichdefineshowthe  
tonesinanimagewillbedisplayedonyourmonitor.MonitorGamma  
canbeadjustedintheAdvancedmenulocatedatthetopofthe  
TWAIN window.  
IfthecolorortonesinyourPre-scannedimageareoffbalance,using  
theGammacontrolstomakeadjustmentstothepre-scannedimage  
willsaveyoutimecorrectingtheimagelaterinaneditingapplication.  
TheSettingsmenulocatedabovethepreviewwindowlimitsyouto  
Gamma1.0orGamma1.5forscanningcolororgrayscaleimages.  
However, TheImageGammalevelsforeachRGBchannelcanbe  
balancedindividuallyintheEnhancewindow(locatedunder  
Advanced).Thesechangesareeffectiveimmediately,andareshown  
inyourpre-scannedimage.  
Image Information  
Informationaboutyourpre-scannedimageisdisplayedinboxesalong  
thebottomofyourTWAINwindow.Usethisinformationasaguide  
whendeterminingwhatscanmodeandresolutionyouwanttoscan  
at. Theinformationasdisplayedfromlefttorightisasfollows:  
CursorPosition Displaysthecoordinatesofyourcursor  
positionasitappearsontheimage.  
ScanAreaCoordinates Displaysthecoordinatesatwhich  
thetopleftcornerofthecroppingboxoriginates.  
ScanAreaDimensions Displaysthedimensionsoftheimage

APre-scanisalowresolutionscanofyourimagedisplayedinthe  
TWAINinterfacewindowonly.YoudoaPre-scantomakeyour  
selectionsforsize,andtomakecontrastandintensityadjustments.  
Scan  
Ascanistheactualimagecapturedattheselectedsettings.Thescan  
doesnotappearinthepreviewwindow,itisdisplayedinthe  
application’sworkspace.  
Panel  
Viewyourscanningpreferencesbyclickingthe  
Panelbuttonlocatedintheleftportionofyour  
interface window. The scanning control  
panel(figure3-3)willappear. Thispanelallows  
youtomakealloftheimageadjustmentsde-  
scribedinthefollowingfourpages.

YourscanningmodeoptionsareRGBColor, GrayScale, andblack  
andwhite.Theseselectionsindicatetheamountofdatayouwantto  
capturefortheimage.Followtheseguidelineswhenselectingascan

RGBColor:ScancolorimagesandphotographsinRGBColormode  
whenyouwanttocaptureandreproduceallthecolordata.Tomanage  
filesizesefficiently,takecarefulnoteoftheguidelinesforresolution  
(describedlater)whenscanninginRGB.ThecombinationofRGBColor  
andahighdpicancreateanextremelylargefilesize,aswellastake  
severalminutestoscan.  
GrayScale:Whatisreferredtoasblackandwhitephotographsare  
actuallygrayscaleimages.Differentshadesofgrayareusedtomake  
upthewholepicture.Whenyouscanthesetypesofimages,youwant  
toscanusingthegrayscalemode.Alsousethismodetoconvertcolor  
photographstoblackandwhite.Scanningacolorphotographingray  
scalewillcapturethecontinuoustones.  
B/W:Thismodecapturesblackandwhiteonly. Usethismodewhen  
scanningsinglecolor(usuallyblack)images,suchasdrawingsor  
sketches,businesslogos,ortext.  
Resolution  
Resolutionismeasuredindotsperinch(dpi).Thehighertheresolution  
isset,themoredetailinyourimageiscaptured.Therearesome  
guidelinesyoushouldfollowwhendeterminingtheresolutionto  
scanat..  
On-linegraphics:Ifyouarescanninganimagetobeusedon-line,such  
astheInternet,aBBSorinamultimediapresentation,youneedn’t  
scananyhigherthan100dpi.Thisisbecauseamonitor’sresolutionis  
either72dpi(Mac),or96or120dpi(PC),andisnotcapableof  
displayingahigherresolution.Imagesscannedat300dpiandviewed  
onamonitorwillappearthreetimesaslargeastheactualimage.This  
enlargementresultsbecauseyourmonitordisplaysimagesina1:1ratio  
ofpixels(ordots),meaningonedotintheimageequalsonedoton-  
screen.At300dpi,theimagecontains3timesasmanydotswhen  
displayedonthemonitor.  
Printedimages:Ifyouplantoprinttheimagesyouscan,setthe  
scanningresolutionnohigherthanequaltotheresolutionofyour  
printer,typically300dpior600dpi.Thiswillavoidsizingdistortionsin  
yourprintedimage.

Faxingimages:AnyimageyouintendtofaxfromaPC-basedfax  
modemshouldbescannedat200dpi. Faxmachinesonlyreceive  
imagesat200dpi,andsomeprogramsmayfaultifyoutrytoscanat  
higherresolutions.

Thiscommandreversesanimage’sdisplay.Blackpixelswillbewhite,  
andwhitepixelswillbecomeblack.Theresultingimageislikeaphoto  
negativeoftheoriginal.  
Brightnessand  
Contrast  
Thesecontrolsadjustthebrightnessandcontrastoftheimageyou  
areabouttoscan.Increasingthecontrastwillsharpentheimageby  
excageratingtheimagescolorsortones.Increasethebrightnessto  
lightentheimageandcompensateforthecontrastselection.  
Experimentwiththesecontrolstodeterminethelookyouprefer.  
Usuallythesecontrolsareadjustedtogetherina2:1ratioof  
brightnesstocontrast.

Scanning images  
ScanningimageswithyourImageReaderscannerisarelativelysimple  
process.Thestepsbelowwalkyouthroughselectingtheappropriate  
TWAINsourcetouse,andthenscanninganimageordocument.If  
youexperienceproblemsduringanyofthesesteps,pleasereferto  
theappendix,Troubleshooting.Youmayneedtomodifythe  
configuration.

The scanning process  
Theinitiationofthescanningprocessmayvaryfromapplicationto  
application.Consulttheapplication’smanualformoreinformationif  
thestepsbelowdon’tresultinascan.Theinstructionsprovidedin  
thesestepsassumetheapplicationusesthemostcommonprocess.  
To scan an image:  
1. StarttheTWAINcompliantimageeditingapplicationinWindows.  
2. SelectAcquirefromtheFilemenu.ThisdisplaystheFlatbed  
Scannerwindow.  
3. Placetheimagefacedownonthescannerglass.ClickPrescan.  
TheprescannedimagedisplaysinthePrescanwindow.  
4. Adjusttheimageasyoudesire.Makeyourselectionsforscan  
mode,resolution,etc.,andusethecropboxinthePrescan  
windowtoselecttheareayouwanttoscan.Followtheguidelines  
describedintheprevioussectiontomakeyourselections.  
Note:IftheimageisnotaslargeastheCropbox,theadditional  
blankareaisalsoscanned,creatinganunnecessarilylargefile.Be  
suretoadjusttheCropboxtofittheexactareayouwanttoscan.  
Todoso,simplyclickanddragoneoftheboxcorners.  
5. Whenyouaresatisfiedwiththeselectedsettings,clickScan.  
Theimageisscannedusingtheselectedsettings,andtransferred  
intotheapplication’sworkspace.  
6. ClickCanceltoclosetheFlatbedScannerwindow.  
Youarereturnedtotheapplication,andthescannedimageis  
displayedintheworkspace.Youmaynowmanipulate,save,print,or  
faxtheimage.  
Otherscanningfeatures  
YourImageReaderscanneriscapableofscanningalltypesof  
documentsandimages.Thescanninginstructionsprovidedhereare  
toensuretheinstallationiscompleteandyourscannerisworking

General Scanning Tips  
16-bitversus32-bitapplications:  
ImagePals2GO!-theimageeditingsoftwareandInfoCenterthe  
scanningcontrolsoftwareincludedwiththeImageReaderExpress  
scanner-areboth16bitapplications.16bitapplicationsaresupported  
by Windows 3.1x and Windows 95.  
Selectingthecorrectsource:  
BeforeattemptingtoscanwithyourImageReaderExpressscanner  
youneedtoselectthesourcefromwhichyouarescanning.Toselect  
yoursourceclickonFile>SelectsourceorFile>Acquire>Select  
Source(dependingontheapplicationyouarescanningwith). Ifyou  
willbescanningintoa16bitapplicationsuchasInfoCenterorImage  
Pals 2 GO! image editor you should select the Flatbed (16)  
choiceinthesourcedialogbox. Ifyouarescanningwitha  
32 bit application such as Adobe Photoshop you should select  
Flatbed(32). Ifyoudonotselectthecorrectsourceyoumay  
receive an error message when attempting to scan or run into  
complications when trying to transfer your scanned image.  
Troubleshooting  
Scanner does not turn on  
Confirmthatthescanner’spoweradapterispluggedintoapower  
sourceandtheindicatorlightison.  
Scanner turns on but does not respond  
ReinstalltheInfoTechniciantoensurethedriverisproperlyloadedor  
restartyourcomputertoresetthesystem.Checkthecable  
connectionsonthescannerandparallelport.Besurethecableis  
pluggedintotheportlabeledHostonthebackofthescanner.Check  
thattheparallelconnectiononthecomputerissecure.  
Scans extremely slow  
Thisiscommonwhenscanningtruecolorathighresolutions.Follow  
thesettingguidelinesinChapter3fortheparticularscanningtask.  
Avoidscanningathighersettingsthannecessary—thisimproves

performance.Ifyoustillexperienceproblemswithyourscanning  
speed,followthedirectionsonpageA-2andA-3toverifythe  
scanner’sportaddressandpossiblychangeyourcomputer’sBIOS

PrinterProblems?  
Cannotprinttoprinter  
Checkthecableconnectionsontheprinterandthescanner.Besure  
thecableispluggedintotheportmarkedPrinteronthebackofthe  
scanner.  
Bi-DirectionalPrinters  
TheparallelportdoesnotsupportBi-directionalprinterssuchasthose  
madebyHewlett-Packard.Thereforeyouwillneedtochangeyour  
printerportinyourcomputer’sBIOSorCMOSsettingstoEPPorSPP  
insteadofbi-directional. Inthiscase,youmayalsoneedtodisable  
yourprinter’sbi-directionalprintingoption(refertoyourprintermanual  
forinstructions)RefertopageA-3forinstructionsonchangingyour  
computer’sparallelportmode.  
Aboutthepass-throughport  
TheImageReaderExpressandImageReaderEliteEPPscannersare  
bothconvenientlyequippedwithapass-throughport.Thisportallows  
youtoconnectanyotherparallelportdevicesuchasaprintertothe  
scannersothattheycansharethesameportfromyourcomputer.  
Tousethepass-throughport,connecttheprinter’scabletotheport  
labeledPrinteronthebackofthescanner. Boththescannerandthe  
printerarenowsharingthesameparallelportandcanbeusedatany  
time,exceptintandem.  
TWAIN Errors  
Ifyourcomputercannotfindordoesnotrecognizethescanner:  
1.Somecomputersystemswillnotrecognizeaninstalledscanner  
unlessthecomputerhascompleteditstart-processentirelyBEFORE  
thescannerisplugged-in. Turnoffthecomputerandun-plugthe  
scanner’sACpowercordfromthepoweroutlet,thenturnonthe  
computer. Afterthecomputerhascompletedstart-upandisrunning  
windows,plug-inscannerandattemptscan.

2.Besureyouhaveselectedtheappropriatesourceforthe  
applicationyouarescanninginto.Most32-bitapplicationsrequire  
youusetheFlatbedScanner(32)source,and16-bitapplications

Error messages  
“ImageTransferFailed”  
Thiserrormessageindicatesthattheselectedscansettingshave  
createdafilesizethatexceedsavailablediskspace.Reducethedpi,  
imagesize,orselectalowermodetoreducethefilesize.  
“Error 82 Scanner not Found” message when attempting a  
scan  
ThiserrorismostcommonwithCompaqandAptivasystemsorany  
systemnotequippedwithanenhancedparallelport. Checkwithyour  
computermanufacturertoverifyifyoursystemsupportstheEn-  
hancedParallelPortmode (ifyoursystemisnotequippedwithan  
EPPcardcall(408)538-2500orfax(408)538-2577toorderanEPP  
interfacecard). IfyoursystemsupportsEPP,checkforthefollowing  
situations:  
1. ThecomputerdetectsaconflictwiththescannersI/Oad  
dress. Performthefollowingfix:  
Runyourflatbedutilityprogramandclicktheverifyporticon.Ifthe  
utilitycannotfindthescanner,youmayneedtochangetheparallel  
portmodeinyourcomputer’sBIOSorCMOSsetupsothatit  
matchesthesettingofyourscannerdriver.Inthiscaserefertostep2.

2. Check your computer’s BIOS setup to make sure that your  
printer portissetforEPPorSPP.  
TheImageReaderExpressscannerwillworkonportsthataresetfor

Changing Your Parallel Port Mode

InfoImageReaderscannersaredesignedtoprovideyearsoftrouble  
freeservice.Toassistinrealizingthisend,followtheguidelineslisted  
below.  
1. Avoidusingthescannerinadustyenvironment,andkeepitas  
dust-freeaspossible.  
2. Ifnecessary,cleanthescannerglasswithasoftlenscloth.  
3. Donotscandocumentswithcorrectionfluid.Thiswillcause  
spottingonthescannerglass.  
4. Donotscandocumentswithpaperclipsorstaples.Theglass  
maybecomescratched.  
5. Don’ttouchthescannerglass.Fingerprintsorscratcheswillshow  
upasunwantedmarksonyourscannedimage.
